Warhammer Skeleton King

Warhammer Skeleton King

I am not entirely sure what the name of this guy is so I have just put it in the most generic terms. This was a miniature from the tabletop war game Warhammer--a game I've never been interested in playing but have fallen in love with the lore and art behind it and its sci fi counterpart, and it is when looking at such things that I saw this model and just had to get it and paint it. I have made a great focus on red and green in this model, including the rust on his chain-mail and sword achieved with pigment powders, and the green patina of his chest plate created by a turquoise wash over a brass base (detail in the photos below). Now looking back at it with these close up pics I do start to see signs of my sloppy-handedness, but overall it is one of my favorite yet.

New Short Story: Rooftop at Night

Rooftop at Night

Today's is a short one, so I can fit it all in this post. Hope you enjoy!

Howard Quik had not expected to see this when he came to sit on his rooftop. He had only come up to gaze at the stars and clear his mind as he usually did at this time, coming up through the attic window and sitting on the bumpy slate tiles to relax after a long day. He had not expected to witness the horror below him, nor did he want to. If only that cat hadn’t hissed so loudly at the pallid monstrosity below to alert Howard of its presence.
No myth has spoken of such blasphemies, nor have any envisioned such things as likely to be beyond the void, but it was there, withering wickedly in the cobbled street. An odour of utter repulsiveness greeted Howard with dizziness and pinned him further to his spot with his fright. Whatever cruel master created such a thing must be very horrific indeed, sickening even to Satan and his demon cohorts. It was nothing of this reality, of this three-dimensional plane, and unlikely to be a thing of any other realm. It did not belong. It shouldn’t have existed.
Many have told of truly evil creatures, but such things under estimate the lumbering horror below Howard at his rooftop vantage point. Madmen have raved upon rotten hallucinations conveying monsters of such nether things, and it was no doubt that they were insane. Up to this point Howard Quik was a very sane, intellectual man known for his fancy into astronomy, but that was gone in a second, and his neighbours would find him the next day in such a state as those madmen who have glimpsed the nether beyond the void, tittering in such profuse and peculiar ways.
In this moment though, poor Howard was still himself, scared none the less, yet possibly even more intelligent for the new horrible truth before him. It was a thing from those dark abysses deeper than hell, with dark rulers with their singular wants and tortured souls yelping hysterical laughter. It was a thing worse than nightmare screeching nastily in those dark streets that had made its way into our waking world, indescribable even by Howard Quik’s insane screams.

A Rant: Reviving Model Making.

Sorry I have been away for a while. I will try posting more often in the future. For now here is a short rant on the decline of scale model enthusiasts.

Bringing Back Sci Fi Model Making

One of my all time passions is sculpture and scale model making; a hobby (or career for some) that has seemed to dwindle and die over the progressing years, especially in the film industry where C.G.I. seems to have taken over. It is an art style that has a very practical application and sets itself apart from conventional painting, drawing and so on, as you can create something in the three dimensional world. It is not as though there are no model kit companies out there, as there is still Airfix and Revel and their equal competition, yet it is more that no one uses skills beyond that which they used as a kid on that one old forgotten Spitfire or Sherman tank, instead of expanding talents on future model making such as "kit bashing" or "scratch building"--which are important to the movie world as well as for artistic appreciation.

A Look at Artists: Mcbess

Mcbess

Mcbess is a French illustrator based in London known for his amazing "cartoon" style that harks back to classics such as Bettie Boop and Merrie Melodies. I noticed this chap's art from the album covers of the band "Dead Pirates"--a pretty great indie rock band worth checking out.  A little research has revealed that Mcbess is actually a member of the Dead Pirates, adding to his awesomeness.

His surrealist approach to work makes for a remarkable cartoony/M.C. Escher appearance. It is all very strange yet stays brilliant. Mcbess manages to retain a gorgeous life to his work, despite the monotone colours of his pen and ink, adding more to the merit that this skilled artist has made for himself.

As well as being a magnificent artist, Mcbess is also a director and has made an animated music video for the song wood by the Dead Pirates.

New Short Story:The Hermit

The Hermit

This is the first of my short stories to go up. It's relatively short with little editing, as I believe it was quite fine from the beginning. It's a horror about a strange man renting an attic room of a house, taking part in peculiar events. Warning: There is some disturbing imagery in this, so not for the faint hearted!

Hello World!

Hello World!

Hello and welcome to Creating Realms. I have created this site in the hopes of showcasing and appreciating the arts--from literature to paintings. There are many things I wish to cover here, so all shall be talked about in the following sections:

My Work

In this section of the site I hope to showcase what I have done myself, in the hopes of inspiring others to similar projects.
There shall be a gallery here where you may find my drawings and paintings, there will also be a section here for short stories I have done. My stories are varied on topics, predominantly science fiction and horror. Though a good deal of editing has been made on them, they are not in their final form so a pinch of salt may be needed.
There is also a section here for any other projects and possibly tutorials I may do.

Artists

Here I will have a look at some artists from around the world and their fascinating work. The artists I look at will be a mixture of known and lesser known folk who I believe need a bit of notice.

Books & Films

In this segment here I will look at the variety of books I have found interesting and will give some sort of review and recommendations. The same goes for films which can be found hereI will try to put these up at least once a week.

Taschen

Though this is still a section on books I think this needs to be in a section of its own. Taschen is a publishing group that does affordable, high quality art books that are nicely written, lain out well with a good amount of pictures to display what they want to say. This is more of a monthly thing where I showcase one of their books that I have managed to pick up.

Leave a comment below to tell me what else I can do for the future of the site.
